How to overcome depression in life

Nobody wants to talk about depression.  Everybody wants to watch inspirational and motivational videos, get pumped up off a triple espresso and a Nike commercial. Everyone wants to talk about how great it is to be motivated, driven and happy. Even if we’re crying inside.

What is Depression?

How to overcome from depression in Life

Depression is a disorder that is evidenced by excessive sadness, loss of interest in enjoyable things, and low motivation. It is normal to experience feelings of sadness and despair in response to adverse life events. Such events could include loss, major life changes, stress, or disappointment. In most cases, the sad feelings resolve as you come to terms with the changes in your life. In situations such as bereavement, these feelings may persist for months and return at significant times, such as birthdays and anniversaries related to the lost loved one. Provided you have times when you can enjoy things, however, this sadness is not a sign of depression.

5 Tips to Overcome from Depression in Life

1. Celebrate the small wins –

Celebrating small wins is an important way to track incremental achievements and work toward much larger goals. Plus, it makes you feel good more often. There is science behind this thought process too. When you accomplish something, it activates the reward center of our brains, allowing us to feel a sense of pride. Specifically, the neurochemical dopamine is released and energizes us with feel-good emotions. This chemical helps you to experience the feeling of getting rewarded and can hook you on wanting to achieve even more. Set Small Goals and celebrate it when you actually achieve it because it gives you a sense of achievements which can help you to come out of the feeling of depression.

2. Cultivate positive self-talk –

Self-talk is something you do naturally throughout your waking hours. People are becoming more aware that a positive self-talk is a powerful tool for increasing your self-confidence and curbing negative emotions. People who can master positive self-talk are thought to be more confident, motivated, and productive.  Although positive self-talk comes naturally to some, most people need to learn how to cultivate positive thoughts and dispel the negative ones. With practice, it can become more natural to think good thoughts rather than bad ones. Self-talk can help you to understand the cause of your depression and you can make a better understanding about your life and come out of this feeling of being depressed.

3. Speak with friends, family and those you love about how you’re feeling -

This is a difficult one. It’s something that I struggle with. But I find that when I turn to the people I trust most not to judge me, they show sincere interest in what’s going on with me and want to help. Even though they may not be able to, just having them listen makes me feel better. Love is a powerful force. And knowing that those who love you truly care about the direction of your life can reinstate hope and a drive to get better. Also, I noticed that those whose calls I didn’t want to return because I felt like I owed them something or because didn’t want to have to explain myself, they cared too.

In fact, I haven’t come across one person who I have shared what I’m going through with who doesn’t care. People genuinely care about your situation and want you to do better. Remember this when you’re down because it’s so easy of us to think the opposite when things are going wrong.

4. Write –

Taking inventory of your life by writing down exactly what you’re thinking and feeling at that moment is one of the best tools I know for uncovering some really interesting things about yourself. The insights you learn from your own writing can be invaluable in helping you to understand your state of mind and how you may overcome it.

The best part is that you don’t need to have a mission for your writing. No structure. No theme. No intended outcome or length. Just write. Sometimes all it takes is a couple of words with a pen and paper (or laptop) and the rest of the words write themselves. Write whatever messed up shit that comes up and filters from your mind to the paper. I’ve written some pretty messed up stuff. But each time I write, I learn a little more about myself. The action of writing down everything that is trapped inside of you is a freeing event. It’s like taking a bottle of your emotions and unscrewing the top to let them out. Even when what you write is really messed up, somehow it feels better to let it out onto paper. At times what you see on the page is flat out ugly. Other times, you may find bits of compassion, gratitude, and hope in there. You don’t have to examine it. You don’t even have to read it. Just let it out and hit the lights. You’ll feel a little better.

5. Meditation –

Meditation
Whenever we hear the word ‘Meditation’, the first picture that comes to mind is yogis and saffron-robed gurujis sitting quietly on the banks of a river or in an isolated place, trying to connect with the Almighty. We think of it as more of a spiritual practice that is not meant for social animals like us. But, truth be told, meditation is so much more! The practice offers a multitude of physical, mental, and emotional benefits. We can come out of depression through meditation and also safe our self form the bad effects of it.

Stress and anxiety are major triggers of depression, and meditation can alter your reaction to those feelings. "Meditation trains the brain to achieve sustained focus, and to return to that focus when negative thinking, emotions, and physical sensations intrude — which happens a lot when you feel stressed and anxious. Meditation has shown to be helpful for treating depression in clinical studies. Mindfulness meditation, in particular, has been shown to have a strong effect on lessening symptoms of depression, such as negative thinking, rumination, and lack of focus. While meditation can be effective in treating depression, even in those with treatment-resistant depression, be aware that it is only one part of what should be a multi-pronged approach to treat depression. Meditation should be used in conjunction with therapy and possibly other traditional methods to fully treat depression.

Mediation takes you to a deep state of relaxation where you have no fears and worries, no memories of past and no tensions of the future. All you feel is the intoxicating silence and that is the stage where your mind experiences itself in its truest, purest, most natural form. You are able to live your every moment to its fullest. Yoga practitioners frequently use meditation to help them achieve this sense of calm and quiet, which then allows them to be in tune with their bodies.
